According to information summarized by Carbon Brief, China's second quarter of 2024 will beCarbon emissionsThe volume fell by 1%, the first quarter of the decline since the lifting of epidemic lockdown measures in December 2022. But based on the latest trends in current energy demand and supply, emissions in 2024 will remain flat overall.

Other key findings from the analysis include:

——In the second quarter of 2024, China's energy demand increased by 4.2% year-on-year, lower than the growth in 2023 and the first quarter of this year, but still far higher than the trend before the new crown epidemic.

——In the second quarter, carbon dioxide emissions from energy use and cement production fell by 1%. Considering a sharp growth of 6.5% from January to February and a monthly decline in March, CO2 emissions increased by 1.3% in the first half of this year compared with the same period in 2023.

——In the first half of this year, wind and solar power generation increased by 171 terawatt-hours (TWh), exceeding the total power generation in the UK in the same period of 2023.

——China's carbon intensity (emissions per unit of GDP) fell by only 5.5%, lower than the 7% reduction required to achieve the national intensity target for 2025.

——In comparison to the same period last year, the increase in the number of electric vehicles on China’s roads has reduced the demand for transporting fuel by about 4%.

——In the first half of 2024, solar panels, electric vehicles and batteries were manufactured to account for 1.6% of China's electricity consumption and 2.9% of emissions.
